Thoughts on my Project

To conclude I choose to do Remix Culture for my intervention because its something thats fasinated me since starting University as I have mentioned. I've always been into remixing music and attempting to produce my own. Always been a Hobby I would like to develop and this course as allowed me to look at different aspects of remix culture. For example Machinima and Video Remix's, I have really enjoyed this module of work at uni and is something im definately going to follow up. As I've said i want to create more remixs of videos from old archive films. Its something that you dont see as much as modern day equivalent remixs.

Im glad i choose to do remix culture for my intervention. It has really inspired me for what I can do for future piece of work. Allowing me to add personal touchs of my own to old classics, Distorting them yet retaining there essence.

Youtube Verisons of my work

I havent been able to upload at the minute but i will display videos of the works I have created

The Creation

To create my piece I used the program im fimilar with "Adobe Premiere Pro CS4", it allowed me to import the clip from archive.org and overlay a fairly new Dub beat on top called "Bass Cannon by Flux Pavilion". I had to adapt the video footage to match the tempo and beat of the Beat. This involved cutting the video into piece and remapping it through the music so each animation would be in time the ryhthm of the tune. Throughout this song there is alot of clap loops which allowed me to get the scarecrow to clap to the beat. Using that as a base through my mix. I could then import other parts and tell the story of the wizard of us between the gaps of the clapping to turn the whole story in a complete direction. Rather than being a theatre based play. it was now more a musical skanking along to Dub by Flux Pavilion.

Here are the processes I used to create my Intervention.

As you can see, I have really cut the film up into snippets then pasted them back together in a sequence to compliment the music. Persoally I think give a great result.

A small rendered version of my Video - I hope to get it up on Youtube and produce alot more.

Each Video telling a story through a music medium/genre. I only choose Dub for this particular one becuase i wanted to incorprate the new with the old and keep it pretty abstract but yet retain its meaning and story telling side.

Why have I choosen this as my intervention?

I was stuck for a while on what I could base my intervention on... I had a think around at a few ideas such as remodeling facebook to change all my friends pictures into portraits of the personality and traits, other ideas i had was remaking brand advertising online and changing the message it gave acrossed. There are similar examples of people remodelling Billboards "graffiting them" to make them say something else or to send another message acrossed to what the intented one was already. But I choose to stick with Remixing, its something that has inspired me alot since being at Uni... instead of defacing peoples work i thought why not update them with a new meaning rather than just changing the message shown on them. With my fasination of the archive of old films found at archive.org on the net. I get me thousands of clips i could work with a remix into my own work with my own personal touches and editting.

 Reasons for Choosing this Film

"The difference between society and culture, the acting... mixing old with the new. upgraded , remixed"
So for mt intervention I have decided to remix the Wizard of Oz from 1910 from archive.org. Its so abstract and strange I love it. So my plan is to keep its abstract strangness but update it into a more modern for of out there kinda art. Looking around to day i had to ask myself of things people would find strange looking back at us from the future.

- Music Tastes
-Way we Live
-Money?
-Cars?
Our Arts and Lifestyles?

Thinking on this, Music is the most likely to be around in the future out of my list. The others fall into catergories that while no doubt change as time does. But I personally feel music while last with us till we are gone in the distant future. Music is something that has always been around and most likely always will. The only things that change in music is the genres, they get updated or they development into something comepletely new with the introduction of new instruments. 20-10 years ago Dubstep was something not many people could imagine I'd like to guess but if you showed it to someone from that time period, they'd find it pretty abstract I think. So for my intervention i thought why not mix the old with the new. Make a remix using and old film and mixing it with a new form of music and see what kinda of result is shown. Looking around on the internet there are alot of dub remix of films and internet clips but i have not found many on old archive films. So this is an ideal chance to make a go of it.

My Idea

When in lecture i was lead to an online website that archives old video clips such as old films. In this lesson i found an old 1910 wizard of oz film that i started to play around with, it was very abstract and the acting very different to what you see now.

Is started tweaking the film in Adobe Primere and Affter effects changing the style/order and layout of the compostion into a new design. I thought about playing around with other films such as Dracula. I find it fansinating what you can do with old film archives and remixing them into a new form with a new purpse. As from the images above you can see its a very play/theatre like look compared to the modern day equivalent.

Exmaples of digital changed media

When thinking for an idea for my intervention i wanted to look at the remix culture. Of taking content and updating it to a new purpose/ meaning. intervention meaning to take something and change it into a different meaning of form, from a digital artists point of view atleast. Looking through the internet there are plenty of examples of people in the remix culture making content and making it their own, adding there personal touches to it. If you go on Youtube you will find thousands of videos demostrating this...

Here are a few examples I've researched on

Music Video

Charlie Sheen Remix, Example of taking a previous piece of media and rediting it for a different purpose. Using the antics of Charlie Sheen to make a remix of his moments.

Pirates of the Carribean Remix, Taking film content and remixing it into a new song

Dub remix

A trailer being used to advertise the craze of angry birds (a andriod/ iphone application) promiting it as an epic war. Taking the fundementals of angry birds and remixing it into a war film trailer to sell the product.

 - I found this in one of my lectures and i like how abstract it is, being from a completey different time period. it illustrates how different acting is from now. Alot more slap stick and random than what your likely to see in a new updated modern version.

Lately i have noticed this advertisemeant on tv alot and i like how they use music to sell a car. An example of intervention...using sex and music of the artist to make this car seem really desireable, A very attractive advert.

Ideas

A few ideas I have come up with on how to do my intervention and what I could do.

-Music Mashup - edit a piece of music from its orginal state into another genre

-Video Mashup - take a video and change the purpose of it

-Logo/Branding distortion - editing brands/logo to put across a complete different message than their orginal intent

-Website mockery - Change the contents of a website

-Film mockery - edit a video into a different genre i.e comedy to horry vice versa

-Music mockery - Taking a serious piece of music and making it silly and vice versa

I want to make a digital impression to change a message of what an orginal digital piece shows and change it into something of my own with another meaning
